Getting started

Installing Ember

Last updated October 23, 2026

From a GitHub release#

Download the binary for your platform from the latest release, then let it install itself:

# macOS / Linux
chmod +x embr-macos-aarch64
./embr-macos-aarch64 self install
# Windows
.\embr-windows-x86_64.exe self install

embr self install copies the binary to ~/.ember/bin, alongside a second binary named embx for running tools without installing them. On Windows it edits the user PATH itself and broadcasts the change, so new terminals see it without logging out; on macOS and Linux it prints the export line to add to your shell profile. Verify with embr --version, and update later with embr self update.

Already had Ember before embx existed? A plain embr self update creates it.

With cargo#

cargo install embr

Run embr self install afterwards anyway. Pinned tools are invoked through shims placed in ~/.ember/bin, and that folder must be on PATH or installed tools can't be run. On Windows ~/.ember/bin goes to the front of PATH, so the ~/.ember/bin copy of embr wins over the cargo copy; update via embr self update from then on.

Managing the installation#

embr self covers the lifecycle: install, update, uninstall, and editor setup. Updates check the latest GitHub release of ember-luau/ember; pre-releases are invisible to it.
