Commands

embr cache

Last updated August 24, 2026

embr cache clean

Deletes both of Ember's caches:

  • ~/.ember/archive-cache — downloaded package archives.
  • ~/.ember/index-cache — git clones of package indices.

Everything re-downloads on demand, so it is always safe to run.

When to reach for it#

  • The archive cache has no size cap and no automatic eviction — this command is the release valve when it grows too large.
  • The first install after upgrading to embr 0.3.0 re-clones each index, because the cache key scheme changed; cache clean removes the orphaned old clones.
  • If a cached archive ever seems wrong, embr install --refresh re-downloads for one install; cache clean starts everything over.

There is no partial or selective clean: both caches go entirely, and the next install is a cold one.

It does not touch the tool store (~/.ember/tools), where pinned tools and embx downloads live. That is embr tool cache clean's job.
